SHAH ALAM: The number of flood victims in the Klang district has risen to 159 people from 39 families following heavy rains since last night, with the displaced residents housed in two relief centres.
As of 7.30 am, the Social Welfare Department's Info Bencana portal reported that two temporary relief centres (PPS) have been opened at the MPKK Bukit Kapar Hall and Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Binjai.
"At the MPKK Bukit Kapar Hall PPS, there are 21 victims from five families seeking shelter, while the PPS at SK Sungai Binjai is accommodating 138 victims from 34 affected families," according to the report.
Monitoring and follow-up actions will continue in response to the flood situation.
Yesterday, it was reported that Selangor's permanent committee chairman for disaster management, Mohd Najwan Halimi, said that water levels began rising at approximately 7 pm to a height of 0.1 to 0.3 metres.
He estimated that around 50 houses were affected.
"The cause of the flooding has been identified as extremely heavy rainfall over a short period in the upstream hilly areas, compounded by an inadequate internal drainage system unable to handle the high volume of surface runoff.
"The drainage system along Jalan Kempas could not accommodate the water flow from higher ground in Bukit Cerakah and Bukit Kapar," he said.
He added that proposed short-term solutions include planning a more systematic drainage system for residential and farming areas to channel water into the main drains under the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS), increasing the frequency of drainage maintenance, and upgrading Kampung Bukit Kapar's drainage system.
