Flash floods hit two Kluang villages, eight families evacuated after heavy rain

KLUANG: A heavy downpour lasting more than two hours unleashed flash floods that affected 11 houses in Kampung Melayu Bukit Nyamuk and Kampung Sumber Jaya yesterday.

Eight families were evacuated to a flood evacuation centre in Kampung Bukit Nyamuk, which was activated at 8.40pm.

State Disaster Management Committee Chairman Tan Sri Dr Azmi Rohani said the district Civil Defence Force was alerted to the rising floodwaters by the penghulu of one of the villages at 7.30pm.

A unit was deployed to the village to assess the situation and assist the residents.

The floodwaters entered homes and partially submerged courtyards, prompting the evacuation as a precautionary safety measure.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) issued an advisory on Dec 29 warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds expected to affect Batu Pahat, Kluang, Pontian, Kulai, Kota Tinggi, and Johor Baru.

Similar weather conditions are also forecast for six states, namely Kedah (Kuala Muda, Sik, Baling, and Kulim), Perak (Larut, Matang, and Selama, Hulu Perak, and Muallim), Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Melaka, and Kuala Lumpur.
