KUALA LUMPUR: A post about a Malaysian man who works at a photocopy store despite having a PhD in Engineering went viral recently.
Mohd Yazid Ismail shared the story of his friend, a PhD holder in Engineering who has been employed at a photocopy store for the past six years with a salary of less than RM3,000.
"My friend graduated in 2018 but until now he only works in a photocopy store as an employee and his salary is not even RM 3,000," he wrote.
Yazid said his friend was unable to secure a job in a field that is related to his PhD qualification.
"I initially thought he was working as a lecturer," wrote Yazid, expressing sympathy.
Azid described his friend as an introvert who is sparing with his words.
They met this week because his friend wanted to update his particulars about an investment he had made with Yazid, an investment consultant.
Despite working in a photocopy shop, he said his friend had diligently invested his earnings.
"He used to invest cash, now the money has increased more than double. He wants to top up the investment," Yazid added.
A social media user, Nur Athirah Hashim said she too has a PhD but runs her own business now.
"I also graduated with a PhD in Chemistry in 2018, but Alhamdulillah, Allah opened the pathway for me to venture into the healthy food business, specialising in keto foods, keto breads, and cakes." she wrote.
Another Facebook user asked for details of his friend's qualifications for potential employment.
"What field of engineering? If it is structural engineering, I may have a freelance job for you," said the commenter.
