KUALA LUMPUR: The possible change in Umno's leadership emanating from its party polls, specifically involving the Barisan Nasional (BN) component party's top two posts, will not jeopardise or disrupt the stability of the current government.
Padang Rengas Umno division chief Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz said it is unlikely that the government will be destabilised as Umno, through BN, had already signed an agreement with Pakatan Harapan (PH) with regards to the formation of the unity government.
"I do not think that if there is a change in Umno after the party polls, we will no longer be with PH, I do not think so because we have already signed, and made an agreement," he told Berita Harian.
The issue of whether Umno's internal polls will take place surfaced after the party's Youth exco Datuk Muhamad Muqharabbin Mokhtarrudin said the party will go through another dark episode if the top posts of president and deputy president go uncontested.
He was reported to have said that both top posts should be contested during the party polls next year.
Nazri said Umno will just lose even more ground, direction and struggle to find its identity if there are efforts made to stop the two top posts from being contested.
The former tourism and culture minister stressed that he will ensure there will be no betrayal if there is a change in Umno leadership.
"The formation of the government was made on the decree and royal assent of the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong. So let us not say that we are defending the Royal Institution and then at the same time ignoring Tuanku's decree and advice.
"There will be no political instability and being an old, experienced hand in Umno, I will make sure there will be no treachery or desertion to this agreement and betrayal of what Tuanku desired.
"We will not ignore the GE15 results that the voters wanted, who put PH as the biggest party of the General Election," he said.
On Dec 16, Pakatan Harapan (PH) inked an agreement between several coalitions under the 'Malaysian Unity Government' to support the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The pact was signed by PH chairman and PKR president Anwar, Barisan Nasional; (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi; Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chief whip Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof; GPS chairman Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg; and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
It was also signed by the party's and coalition's secretaries-general including PH's Senator Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Parti Warisan's Datuk Loretto S.Padua Jr, BN's Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, GPS's Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi and GRS's Datuk Seri Marsidi Manjun.
