KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein today has hinted that he may contest the party's top posts in the upcoming party polls.
The Sembrong member of parliament, however, said he would only make his decision after the party's general assembly decides on whether the two top posts should be contested or not.
The former Umno vice-president also did not reveal which post he is vying for.
"We should wait for the outcome of this assembly.
"If it is decided that the two top posts are to be contested, I don't mind contesting," he told journalists after the president's policy speech at the Umno General Assembly.
Earlier, Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in his policy speech said it is up to the delegates to decide whether the party's top two posts should be contested or not.
This is ahead of the party's polls which must be held before May 19.
Zahid said he is leaving the matter to the delegates to decide.
Yesterday, former Rembau member of parliament Khairy Jamaluddin on Instagram said Zahid has given his assurance that he is ready to "fight" in the party elections.
Khairy said he met Zahid, during which the latter said he was ready to defend his post as party president.
In the 2018 election, Zahid was elected as president with 93 votes, defeating his two challengers Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah and Khairy.
