Johor launches a housing scheme that comes with a savings plan

The government of Johor has launched "Rumah Transit Bangsa Johor" (RTBJ) as one of its measures to help its people own homes.

Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said that this housing programme is different from the "rent-to-own" idea.

According to him, renters of RTBJ homes must make a monthly payment of RM650, of which RM455 goes towards rent and RM195 goes towards savings.

He said a person will save RM11,000 over five years through the RTBJ initiative, reported Bernama.

"This money (savings) can then be used to pay the deposit for the house," he said when speaking at the launch of the Johor Housing Development Corporation (PKPJ) Transformation Services.

Onn Hafiz said the state government hopes to build 92 units under the new scheme this year, and another 500 units in the coming five years.

He also praised PKPJ's numerous reforms, particularly the ones that included governance.

According to him, PKPJ resolved 300 files (releases and offers of Bumiputera properties) that had been outstanding for years in just four months.

"They worked day and night on real estate property worth RM3.8 billion, which brought in a revenue of RM243 million for the state government," said Onn Hafiz.

According to him, PKPJ in collaboration with various agencies were able to settle 2,800 strata title rights within a year, some of which had been outstanding for up to ten year

"No less is the initiative to reduce bureaucracy. Among the things that we've done was in terms of application process. For example, the Affordable Housing applications, one will need to submit 17 forms. Today there is no need for these 17 forms, only five documents are needed," he added.
