KL2017: Two Myanmar squash players withdraw over whiplash injuries following bus accident

KUALA LUMPUR: Two Myanmar players have withdrawn from the Sea Games squash competition after suffering whiplash injuries in an accident early Monday morning.

Olympic Council of Malaysia secretary general Datuk Low Beng Choo, however, described the injuries suffered by women's doubles players Aye Aye Thin and Ei Ei Pyone as not serious although they are not ready to play.

Two buses carrying 28 squash players from Myanmar, Philippines and Thailand collided en route to the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil from Putrajaya.

The players were taken to the National Sports Institute to have their injuries assessed as the start of the competition was delayed.

"We are grateful there were no serious injuries although the team manager of Myanmar has asked for a psychologist to speak to their players due to the traumatic nature of the incident," said Low, who is also Masoc sports and technical committee secretary, after a meeting of team managers at the squash venue.

The team managers agreed to resume competition in the evening with all matches scheduled for Monday to be completed as soon as practical while the start of Tuesday's is to be pushed back by an hour.
