KUALA LUMPUR: A video of man engaged in a shouting match with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) enforcement officers and bystanders in Cheras is fast gaining attention on social media.
The four minute, six second-long clip began with the man in a striped shirt accompanied by an older female companion screaming angrily at two uniformed men, understood to be DBKL staff.
It is understood that the commotion was caused by the officers clamping his car for parking illegally. The incident is believed to have taken place outside the Cheras Leisure Mall.
When things got heated and the man started pushing and shoving the officers, one of the women tried to separate the enraged man from the officers, while someone from the background was heard yelling: “Pukul! Pukul lah! (Hit! Just hit!)”.
The man then told the officers to take off their uniforms. He challenged them to a fight.
The video then showed his vehicle (a silver Perodua Myvi), which appeared to have been clamped but the car was soon freed of the device by another man.
The Myvi driver, in Cantonese, told a bystander that he was only gone "for about five minutes" before finding his car clamped.
When he went on to raise his voice to an officer, a bystander, who was previously recording the incident, stepped in and found himself being yelled at by the angry Myvi driver.
“You mau apa? Mari lah, (What do you want? Come at me!),” the driver shouted.
A younger woman was also seen entering the scene to try and calm him.
Soon after, the Myvi driver entered his car and produced what appeared to be a stick, before squaring up to one of the DBKL officers.
Before the commotion worsened, both of the women tried to de-escalate the situation, with the younger woman attempting to pull the enraged man away.
After the man entered the car, he was also heard threatening the officers and some of the bystanders by saying: “Okay ah! Tunggu ah! (Alright, just you wait!)”, after the other men challenged him to fight.
He then drove off, leaving the scene with the two women.
The video has since gone viral, racking up more than 30,000 views and had been shared almost 300 times by netizens.
Facebook user Ryna Rose lambasted the man for parking illegally by the roadside. She said: “five minutes or five seconds, do not freely park your car all over the place! If you do not have the money to pay summonses, then park your car accordingly!”.
Abd Aziz Saad commented: “Just nab him for obstructing government servants from doing their duties, hurling profanities and threatening the officers. Let the police take action”.
The NST is currently contacting the authorities for comments.
This is the second video to have emerged recently featuring drivers challenging enforcement officers who had clamped their vehicles.
Earlier this month, a video of a woman, wielding a steering lock while screaming at Subang Jaya Municipal Council officers for clamping her car, was circulated widely on social media.
In that incident, the woman had claimed that she had only parked the car illegally for a short while as she had wanted to buy food for her disabled husband.
UPDATE: 6.33pm
Meanwhile, Cheras police chief Assistant Commissioner Chong Kok Sin said the incident happened at Taman Segar in Cheras, yesterday.
He confirmed that the 12.40pm incident was sparked when the Kuala Lumpur City Hall officer clamped the wheels of the man’s car for illegal parking.
He said DBKL’s call centre contacted the officer to remove the wheel clamp after the man agreed to pay the fine.
“However, a dispute ensued between the two which escalated into a fight,” Chong said.
He said the officer lodged a report at the Sentul police station yesterday.
He said police will record statements from the officer, the man, as well as witnesses.
