KUALA LUMPUR: A 36-year-old imam was charged in the magistrate's court today with cheating a man of RM3,800 in exchange for a marriage certificate.
Mohd Mustakim Ithnin was alleged to have induced Fazal Mohd Hussain, 40, to hand him the payment in stages by convincing the victim that he could obtain a valid marriage certificate.
The offence was allegedly committed near a food court at Batu 4 1/2, Jalan Ipoh, Sentul, between Oct 7 and Oct 18 last year.
He pleaded not guilty.
The offence under Section 420 of the Penal Code carries a maximum imprisonment of 10 years, whipping and can be fined, upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Nurilya Ellyna Nor Azmal suggested bail of RM7,000.
However, the accused who is a father of two pleaded for a minimum bail stating that he was a sole breadwinner for his family.
Magistrate Tawfiq Affandy Chin set bail at RM3,000 with one surety and fixed March 5 for hearing.
