ALOR STAR: Classes at SK Jabi here was interrupted today when flash floods hit following several hours of heavy rain.
The school administrators had made the decision to call off classes at 11am after the classrooms located on the ground floor were inundated by one metre deep water.
All 368 pupils in the school were subsequently allowed to return home as the school’s administrators feared the situation could get worst.
The school’s Parents Teacher Association (PTA) chairman Zakaria Ismail said this was the second time the school was hit by flash flood this week.
He claimed that the incident was caused by the poor drainage system, which was compounded by ongoing roadworks nearby.
Zakaria said the issue had been going on for five years and they have lodged complaints to relevant authorities but no action has been taken.
Earlier this morning, residents in the Tawar area have been told to prepare for evacuation following heavy rainfall since early this morning, which has caused Sungai Ketil to overflow.
Baling Welfare Department officer Shamsul Izrin Isahak said Kampung Charok Purun in Tawar was hit by flash floods.
He said as of now, none of the affected families have been evacuated but he reminded those living in low-lying areas to be prepared for the possibility of being temporarily relocated to the flood relief centre.
