Two Kuantan families evacuated due to flash floods

KUANTAN: Seven people from two families in Kampung Sri Damai here were evacuated to a flood relief centre following a flash flood triggered by a four-hour downpour today.

The victims are currently seeking refuge at the Sri Damai public hall, which was opened at 5pm this afternoon.

This was confirmed by Civil Defence Force Colonel Zainal Yusof.

"Evacuation of the victims were made by the Civil Defence Force with the cooperation of the police, the state Fire and Rescue Department and the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK).

"Initial aid in the form of supplies of food and daily necessities have been distributed by the Welfare Department at the flood relief centre," he said.

Zainal reminded members of the public that the rainy weather - which began on Friday - is expected to continue until Wednesday.

He urged residents of low-lying areas to get up-to-date information from the local authorities.

He added that the Civil Defence Force and the police would continue to monitor the situation, and advised residents to cooperate when directed to evacuate.
