160 homes in Yan hit by flash floods

YAN: Residents at the foothill of Gunung Jerai, who are still rebuilding their lives after the August "mini tsunami", had another scare today.

Several hours of heavy rain this evening caused some 160 homes in Yan and Singkir to be submerged in nearly metre-deep floodwaters.

State Civil Defence Force disaster management secretariat chief Mohd Muaz Mohd Yusof said they received a distress call in the Yan district around 6.30pm today.

He said 60 houses were affected in Kampung Perigi, Kampung Raga, Titi Bakong, Kampung Lubuk Boi, Yan town and Pulau Chengai.

"Yan town is inundated and cannot be accessed by light vehicles," he said when contacted.

Muaz said 100 homes in Singkir Darat town, Singkir Kedai Keling, Singkir Genting and Singkir were affected by flash floods.

"We wish to advise the people in Yan district to be vigilant and to take precautions if their house is flooded and to immediately contact rescue forces if need be," he said.

Murshirul Omar, 39, said he rushed to his parents' home in Kampung Raga upon being informed that the village was hit by flash floods.

"Yan town was already hit by floods when I was travelling back to my parents' house. The currents were so strong, much like what we experienced two months ago," he said when contacted.

It is learnt that the river had overflowed, causing flash floods in Titi Hayun and Batu Hampar while Yan town was submerged in up to 0.7m-deep floodwaters.

Murshirul said his parents Umar Abu Yazid and Siti Aisyah Hanafi, both in their 60s, were safe but their home was in knee-deep water.

In the August disaster, water surges from the waterfall areas at the foot of the Gunung Jerai caused floods that affected some 1,000 houses in Yan and Kuala Muda, claiming the lives of six people.
