KUALA LUMPUR: Fraser's Hill in Pahang remains a favoured choice for Malaysians seeking a tranquil and invigorating escape, despite some concerns about the state of certain buildings and limited amenities.
While some visitors have reported less-than-ideal experiences, especially with accommodations, the hill station continues to attract people drawn to its cool climate, pristine environment and scenic trails.
Regulars who frequent the destination shared on the New Straits Times' Facebook post that it is an ideal spot to relax, camp outdoors, or take a break from the city's hustle and bustle.
They were quick to dismiss claims that Fraser's Hill is a "ghost town." However, some pointed out the need to improve the maintenance of the area and provide additional amenities, such as public toilets for campers.
Several visitors also suggested increasing dining options, while others stressed the need for refurbishing some of the "abandoned-looking buildings."
"It's a nice, quiet, and peaceful place. It's just that some of the buildings are a little rundown. It would be great if the hotels could be refurbished to make them look less creepy," Soraya Norman commented.
"Fraser's Hill is ideal for a few days' rest in a cool forest atmosphere. However, some buildings are not well-maintained," Gurmit Jassal said, noting that the local authorities should act on promoting or making the place more attractive.
Tom Ng said: "It is a great place for nature lovers. The only drawback is the condition of some of the older hotels and the road leading to the hill station. However, it offers the best natural beauty."
"It's (Fraser's Hill) definitely not rundown. But a few simple modernisation such as (having more) coffee houses or bakeries would be a welcome addition," Muzammil Zolkepli commented.
Similarly, Mugilan Rajamohan said: "This is an underrated destination, but it seriously lacks essential shops like coffeehouses and breakfast spots.'"
"We were there last month (March). It is still the nice serene quaint little town. It is a place to relax," Ogee Karim wrote.
"The authorities should plant more flowers to beautify the place," Patrick Lee suggested.
Zubaidah Abdul Hamid said: "Fraser's Hill is a great place to relax and unwind. State authorities should take action to prevent it from becoming a neglected tourist spot."
"I went there with my family and friends last year, and it was a great and memorable trip for us. We visited during the weekdays, and I could still see cars (but not many) around," Yeoh Jia Ren said.
"Fraser's Hill is one of the best cool places to go for a day trip. There are lots of trails and opportunities to experience nature," Dzul Ain wrote.
Lawrence Khan said: "I have been there more than 10 times. It's a beautiful, serene, green, cool, and clean place."
"It is time (for the relevant parties) to revive this tourist spot," Guat Mei Khoo remarked.
Meanwhile, Jun Xing, expressed disappointment with the lack of available activities and the poor maintenance of hiking and jungle trekking trails.
"However, for those who appreciate the natural beauty of the area, Fraser's Hill can be a perfect destination."
The cool weather and picturesque buildings give the impression of an old English town, making it a unique and charming getaway spot, Jun Xing added.
They were commenting on a posting about a Malaysian family who recently took to TikTok to share about their disappointing holiday experience in Fraser's Hill after booking a stay at a hotel online.
Several Malaysians who have travelled to the hill resort shared similar experiences in the comment section of the TikTok video describing the place as being "spooky" and "deserted".
The New Straits Times is reaching out to Tourism Pahang and the local authority for a response.
