Fire engulfs three warehouses storing used goods

SUNGAI PETANI: A fire broke out at Bukit Selambau, involving three warehouses storing used items such as metal, wires and copper.

Kedah Fire and Rescue Department senior fire officer I Wan Mohd Hamizi Wan Mohd Zin said the flames were brought under control at 10.02pm.

He said the department's Operations Control Centre had contacted the Hazardous Material special unit (Hazmat) to conduct an inspection at the site.

"Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) had already cut off the electricity supply to the warehouse area to facilitate the operation.

"The firefighting operation was divided into four sectors: the first, second, and third sectors were affected, while the fourth sector reportedly did not experience any fire outbreak."

"At the initial report, it was stated that a factory was on fire, but investigations revealed that it involved three warehouses," he said when contacted today.

Wan Mohd Hamizi said the Aman Jaya, Sungai Petani, Kulim Hi-Tech and Yan Fire and Rescue stations were roped in to assist in the firefighting operation.

The operation also received assistance from volunteer fire squads from Bukit Selambau, Jeniang, Semeling, Bedong, Sik, Gurun, and Kota Sarang Semut.

"The firefighting operation is still ongoing to ensure that the fire is completely extinguished."

"So far, no casualties have been reported and the cause and extent of the damage are still under investigation," he said.

Earlier reports indicated that thick smoke and sparks filled the air after a factory caught fire in Bukit Selambau last night. A 10-second video of the incident was also circulated on social media platforms.
