Apartment residents sweat over widening cracks in road near building

KUALA LUMPUR: Residents of a low-cost apartment in Petaling Jaya are worried about their safety after cracks in a road near their building widened.

The cracks near Pangsapuri Petaling Utama were first spotted a week ago, after a developer began construction on a vacant plot of land in the area.

The apartment's resident's association president, Mohamad Ali Malek said residents recently raised the issue with the developer who sent engineers to inspect the cracks.

According to Ali, the engineers said the site was "safe".

"But, how can we take their (engineers) word for it when the cracks keep widening," he told the New Straits Times.

"There are over 1,000 residents here. Any soil erosion or sinkholes will be detrimental to all of us.

Ali, who has lived in the building for over 20 years, said this was the first time that cracks in the road have appeared near the building surrounded by many high-density developments.

He said the resident's association want the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) and other authorities to review the safety of their building and the area around it.

NST is reaching out to the developer and MBPJ for comments.
