Zenn captures Kuala Lumpur Open

KUALA LUMPUR: Promising tennis player Zenn Lim achieved her maiden senior title after emerging victorious at the Kuala Lumpur Open today.

Zenn, who turned 17 last month, downed Negri Sembilan's Iman Syuhada Abdullah 6-1, 6-2 in the women's singles final at the National Tennis Centre.

Zenn received RM5,000 for her win while Iman took home RM2,500.

Selangor's Zenn, who defeated Indonesia's Jessy Rompies in the semi-finals, said the final was harder than the scoreline suggested.

The KL Open also doubled as the third leg of the national circuit for Malaysian players.

"Iman's playing style is very different, she likes to hit a lot of high balls which have no pace," said Zenn.

"This makes it hard to attack as you have to generate your own power to create pace and you also have to be accurate. It's quite difficult to play against her.

"My strategy today was just to play consistently, try and make her run more and also try to lure her to the net and pass her.

"This is the first time I have won a leg of the national circuit, my previous best was a run to the semi-finals."

The men's singles title went to Koay Hao Sheng (Perlis) who downed Indonesian Rifqy Sukma 6-4, 6-0 in the final.

Rifqy came out firing in the opening set but he was unable to convert the big points, allowing the more consistent Hao Sheng to churn out a straightforward win.

"Both of us were quite tired after a week of tough games but we managed to put out a good match," said Hao Sheng.

Hao Sheng had defeated Perak's Daniel Leong Prickett 6-1, 6-3 while Rifqy had downed Darrshan Kumar 6-4, 6-4 to book his spot in the decider.

Hao Sheng received RM8,000 for the win while Rifqy took home RM4,000.
