BALING: A man was killed while his daughter was injured following a collision with a pickup truck carrying three policemen at Gunung Inas, Jalan Baling-Pengkalan Hulu, here today.
According to Buletin TV3, the deceased has been identified as Shafiron Mohd Zaid, 40, from Sungai Petani, who succumbed to severe head and body injuries. His daughter, Asiah Shafiron, aged 2, sustained injuries to her body.
The three policemen involved are from the D5 Branch, Criminal Investigation Division (BSJD) of the Pengkalan Hulu District Police Headquarters (IPD), Perak, and sustained injuries to their bodies, chest, and legs.
It is understood that the three policemen, aged between 22 and 45, had just completed a task and were on their way to carry out a welfare visit in Baling.
Baling District police chief, Superintendent Azmi Mokhtar, said the Baling IPD traffic inquiry office was informed by the public of the accident involving two vehicles at the scene at 2.30pm today.
He said that initial investigations at the scene revealed that the pickup truck, carrying the three policemen, was travelling from Pengkalan Hulu towards Baling, while a Proton Waja car carrying the father and daughter was coming from the opposite direction, from Sungai Petani towards Pengkalan Hulu.
"As the vehicles approached the scene, the Proton Waja, which was coming from the opposite direction, was believed to have lost control and veered into the path of the pickup truck.
"The driver of the pickup truck was unable to avoid the collision and struck the front-right side of the Proton Waja.
"As a result of the crash, the driver of the Proton Waja suffered serious injuries and was confirmed dead at the scene," he said in a statement today.
Azmi added that the driver and two other passengers in the pickup truck, as well as the front passenger of the Proton Waja, sustained minor injuries and were sent to Baling Hospital for further treatment.
He said the body of the Proton Waja driver was sent to the Forensic Unit of Kulim Hospital for an autopsy.
"The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," he added.
